When the customer has to decide on a radio receiver, there are many modules to review. The question that customers often ask is "can this module receive at x metres"?

It may seem that an article that tries to relate the receiver's specifications to actual communication distance capability makes sense for the customer. After all, the customer can make an informed choice.

In the field however, there are many unknowns which include noise and interference from unknown sources. These are things that cannot be accounted for in the laboratory.

So this article's scope has been limited to understanding specifications - it cannot indicate if communication can be established in your specific environment but it can make you ask the right questions when searching for a receiver.
